Mixtape is a 45-minute performance of single-movements from celebrated string quartets set in the casual and creative venue of The Flea Pit. An experimental DJ set precedes the performance. Works to be performed include Debussy, Borodin, Haydn, Dvorak, and Barber. The playlist is personal and logical, based on the inspiration and context for which the works were written, particularly in having to do with appropriation of cultural and aesthetic ideas prevalent in the time of composition.
Mixtape aims to examine current models of classical music performance, explore the origin of its tradition, and experiment by transforming the recital in a context that is relevant to contemporary culture, in an attempt to reconcile the differences and assumptions that discourage mutual interest and involvement.
