Aural smoke

We are archiving our sounds faster and more comprehensively than ever before, even as copyright restrictions and the pace of technological change threaten the long-term viability of such archives. Yet in that same time, a 148 year-old recording made of paper and smoke has been played back and digitised. An audio recording made from smoke, people, that has already outlasted your iPod by around 14 decades. The recording may have caused Charlotte Green to corpse spectacularly on the Today show this morning, but this sounds like real-life magic to me.
